In a surprising turn of events at UFC 324 held in Las Vegas, the UFC abruptly canceled a much-anticipated lightweight match between Alexander Hernandez and Michael Johnson just hours before kickoff at the T-Mobile Arena. This decision came after the discovery of suspicious betting patterns surrounding the bout, as confirmed by UFC CEO Dana White during the post-fight meeting. With Hernandez holding an 18-8 record and Johnson a 24-19 record, the matchup attracted considerable attention from fans but was ultimately scrapped due to integrity concerns. This event comes on the heels of a recent betting controversy that cast a spotlight on the UFC. The organization grappled with similar issues less than three months ago when peculiar betting activity was reported around a fight featuring Isaac Dulgarian and Yadier del Valle. Despite warnings from Integrity Compliance 360 about unusual betting lines, that fight went ahead only for Dulgarian, the favorite, to lose under questionable conditions. As a result, Dulgarian was subsequently released from the UFC's roster. Discussing the decision to cancel the Hernandez-Johnson match, Dana White stated, "This happened again, and I was immediately notified by our gaming integrity team. I decided we're not repeating past mistakes, so we pulled the fight." Previously, Dana White had responded to allegations of widespread fight-fixing within the UFC, denouncing such claims as exaggerated and sensationalist. "Listen, claims of 100 flagged fights are just clickbait. We're vigilant with every fight that takes place," he affirmed following the Dulgarian incident. This marks the third instance of a federal probe into suspicious activities involving UFC matches. Back in 2023, the well-publicized suspension of former UFC competitor and coach James Krause following questionable betting activities on a fight involving his trainee, Darrick Minner, highlighted similar challenges. Minner suffered a rapid defeat, later attributed to an undisclosed pre-fight injury. Such occurrences underscore the pressing issue of maintaining integrity in professional sports betting environments.
