YEREVAN, January 14 – Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the return of four Armenian captives from Azerbaijan. The individuals, Gevorg Sudjyan, David Davtyan, Vigen Euldjiekjian, and Vagif Khachatryan, were transferred through the Hakkari Bridge into Armenia. According to Pashinyan, they are now safely back on Armenian territory. While Azerbaijan officially acknowledges holding only 33 Armenian military and civilian captives, Armenian human rights advocates claim there are 80 more still detained. Tensions remain high, with several former leaders and officials of Artsakh, including ex-ministers and military commanders, currently under arrest in Azerbaijan. Additionally, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) ceased its mission in the region from September 3, 2025, following the Azerbaijani government's demand. The ICRC assured that it continues to work with Azerbaijani authorities to aid individuals protected under international humanitarian law. Negotiations are expected to persist to address the humanitarian concerns arising from the unresolved conflicts and the plight of those still detained. This development is part of the broader, complex geopolitical landscape in the South Caucasus, where historical grievances and national interests perpetuate discord. Efforts are being made by international organizations to mediate and alleviate the human toll of these disputes, yet the path to lasting peace remains fraught with challenges.
