In a heartwarming event, cancer survivors gathered at Aiken Regional Medical Centers to celebrate life, resilience, and the power of support. Among the uplifting stories is Franki Stevens of North Augusta, who faced a daunting breast cancer diagnosis nearly a year ago. After enduring surgery, radiation, and over 20 chemotherapy sessions, Stevens now stands triumphant, enjoying life with the aid of immunotherapy and grateful affirmation, 'I'm cancer-free.' At the 31st annual Cancer Survivors Day, she danced with joy, flanked by fellow survivor and friend Sonia Steelman. Steelman, a breast cancer survivor since 2013, attributes her recovery to divine intervention and support, emphasizing the fortunate absence of radiation or chemotherapy in her treatment. Both women bonded over shared experiences and a history of working together at Aiken High School, showcasing the profound connections forged through adversity. Alice Schoultz from Edgefield County, another inspiring survivor who battled breast cancer since 2007, echoed the sentiments of celebration and gratitude. Her journey, though arduous, is a testament to strength and spiritual faith. Held in the Aiken Regional parking lot, the event was a lively occasion, complete with a DJ, festive photo spots, and colorful balloons. Survivors and their loved ones enjoyed a complimentary meal and gifts like T-shirts symbolizing their courageous fight. Brent Slack, director of radiation oncology at Aiken Regional, emphasized the significance of honoring those who have bravely endured cancer's challenges. October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month framed this event as not only a moment of personal victory but also a collective tribute to survival and hope. This annual gathering solidifies the message that community, combined with medical advancement and unwavering support, forms the cornerstone of conquering cancer.
