In a decisive electoral victory, the Prosperity Party led by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has solidified its control of the 547-seat House of Peoples' Representatives. Surpassing a threshold for a majority, the party clinched 438 seats during the nationwide polls held on June 1, as unveiled by the National Election Board's recent announcement. This election cycle involved participation from only 17 out of 42 political organizations, showcasing the sweeping dominance of the Prosperity Party in Ethiopia's evolving political landscape. The polls were conducted in most regions of the East African country, engaging over 50 million registered voters, with an impressive turnout rate of approximately 94%—an indication of robust public engagement. Notably, the Tigray region was excluded from this national exercise owing to persistent instability—a residue from the recently concluded two-year conflict between federal troops and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Other territories, including portions of Oromia and Amhara, also witnessed voting disruptions; media reports cited security issues that led to 143 polling stations being nonoperational. Since assuming office in 2018, Prime Minister Abiy has spearheaded significant political and economic reforms, despite overseeing a tenure marred by conflict, notably the unrest in Tigray and continued strife in Oromia and Amhara. The current election results further cement his party's presence, as he transitioned from leading the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front to establishing the Prosperity Party in 2019. Despite these achievements, the election faced scrutiny. Key opposition groups, including the Oromo Federalist Congress and Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice, criticized the process, citing coercive practices, limited political campaign avenues, and the sidelining of prominent leaders, challenging the credibility of the elections as free and fair. The report from the African Union Election Observation Mission, led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, highlighted a largely peaceful electoral day with orderly proceedings in most observed stations. In his remarks, Kenyatta recognized Ethiopia's proud legacy of resilience and its unyielding stance against colonization. Under Ethiopia’s parliamentary republic framework, these election outcomes will significantly influence the country's executive structure, determining both the composition of the ruling party's government and the selection of the prime minister. Reacting to the electoral triumph, the Prosperity Party in its statement extended gratitude to the electorate for participating in a peaceful and credible process, reiterating their goal to enhance inclusive economic growth, uplift individual livelihoods, and expand job creation opportunities throughout the nation.
