For years, the indie RPG Dread Delusion struggled to run smoothly on the Steam Deck. Despite early optimizations, the game suffered from inconsistent framerates that marred the experience for players who wanted to enjoy the game on the go. However, a recent update has finally transformed the game's performance on the Steam Deck, delivering a rock-solid 60 fps and extending battery life to over four hours. This significant enhancement is believed to be due to the fixes and improvements made for the game's console releases, notably the Switch 2 port. Dread Delusion's previous performance issues were a sore point for fans and developers alike. Last year, attempts to play the game on the Steam Deck in its early stages were met with a disappointing 25 fps, despite concerted efforts by the developer, Lovely Hellplace, to optimize gameplay. Frustrating benchmark showcases and forum discussions highlighted the persistence of these issues, showcasing minimal relief through settings adjustments. The April 15 patch, however, brought a refreshing shift. Players—myself included—have reported that the game maintains stable frame rates and reduced hang times during area loading or autosaving, marking a stark contrast to the choppy past performance. This update finally grants portable players the opportunity to delve into the vibrant world of Dread Delusion without the need for a desktop setup. As Lovely Hellplace turns towards future projects, including an enticing JRPG-style game called Entropy that promises to expand on Dread Delusion's unique art and narrative style, the community's faith in their capabilities is renewed. Dread Delusion boasts compelling RPG quests, such as the thought-provoking "The Ethics of Eating Flesh," which challenges players with moral dilemmas evocative of classic sci-fi narratives. This improvement solidifies its place among my most cherished RPG experiences.
