Kyrie Irving, currently a key figure in the Dallas Mavericks lineup, hasn't had the chance to share the court with his promising teammate Cooper Flagg due to injuries. However, that hasn't stopped him from admiring Flagg's talent and potential. At the recent 2026 NBA All-Star Game in Inglewood, California, while nursing a Torn ACL that he sustained in March 2025, Irving was seen reflecting on the burgeoning career of Flagg, who was absent from the event due to a left foot sprain. Despite being only 19, Flagg has already demonstrated skills that hint at a transformational career. Irving expressed his views, declaring Flagg to be on a path to 'chase history', a sentiment he believes wholeheartedly, regardless of his current absence on the court. This comes as high praise from an established NBA star to the young player who's inadvertently starting a new era in Dallas, fresh out of Duke University. The Dallas Hoops Journal captured Irving saying, 'Cooper (Flagg) is just an amazing player, and that’s not even just gassing it. At 19 years old, doing the things that he’s doing within our league is very special … I don’t want to mince my words either. He’s doing things that some of the greats, even before him, didn’t do. He’s chasing history.' Such remarks are about more than just his potential; they've already been substantiated by Flagg's on-court achievements. Flagg, dubbed 'the Maine Event', has made waves in the NBA, achieving feats shared only by legends. One of his standout accomplishments includes scoring 35 points in a game at age 18, a record held alongside none other than LeBron James. Flagg managed to score a career-high 49 points in a game against the Charlotte Hornets, a performance that featured a showdown with his former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel. Though Flagg's Rookie of the Year potential is front and center, other contenders like Philadelphia 76ers' rookie VJ Edgecombe and the efficient scorer Knueppel are also in the running. Nonetheless, the odds favor Flagg's chances of accepting the accolade. As for Irving, his rehabilitation proceeds with an optimistic outlook. He assured his supporters through a statement: 'My rehab is going well. Whenever I’m a hundred and fifty percent healthy, I’ll be back. I want to be better than where I was. So that’s saying a lot. It’s a big hill to climb, but it’s worth it.' This reaffirmation shows his determination to bounce back and contribute actively to the Mavericks once fully recovered. Flagg, coping with his own injury, is anticipated to make a significant impact once recovered. Initially finding his footing at the season's start, his temporary role as point guard has honed different facets of his game. A return to his preferred forward position could see Flagg elevate his already impressive performance and potentially outpace contemporaries like Knueppel.
